General Overview

Clopidogrel helps prevent blood clots from forming in blood vessels (arteries). It is widely prescribed to patients who have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or have peripheral arterial disease.

Reported Uses

Used to prevent thromboembolic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS], recent MI, stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease.

General Characteristics

Significantly reduces the risk of recurrence of heart attacks and strokes, keeping stents open after angioplasty.

General Mechanism of Action

An inactive prodrug that requires activation by CYP2C19. Irreversibly blocks the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets, preventing activation of the GPIIb/IIIa receptor complex and reducing platelet aggregation.

Storage Guidelines

Store below 25°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach of children.

General Educational Notes

Consistency is vital. Do not stop taking clopidogrel without consulting your cardiologist, as stopping abruptly increases heart attack risk.
