General Overview

Gabapentin is used to treat nerve pain caused by shingles (postherpetic neuralgia], diabetic neuropathy, and to control certain types of seizures. It should not be stopped abruptly.

Used for postherpetic neuralgia, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, restless legs syndrome, and adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures.

General Mechanism of Action

Designed to mimic GABA but does not bind to GABA receptors. It binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, reducing excitatory neurotransmitter release.
