General Overview

Heparin is a parenteral anticoagulant that acts immediately when given intravenously. It requires monitoring of activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT).

Reported Uses

Used for prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism, management of acute coronary syndrome, and during cardiopulmonary bypass.

General Characteristics

Immediate onset of action, highly reversible with protamine sulfate antidote.

General Mechanism of Action

Binds to antithrombin III, accelerating its inhibition of thrombin and activated factor X (Factor Xa], preventing fibrin clot formation.

Storage Guidelines

Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Do not freeze.

General Educational Notes

Keep a medical alert card indicating you are on heparin therapy. Watch for red/dark urine or black tarry stools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HIT (Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia)?

HIT is a serious immune reaction to heparin where the body develops antibodies that destroy platelets, paradoxically causing massive clotting throughout the body. It requires immediate discontinuation of heparin.

How is Heparin different from Warfarin?

Heparin is given via injection and works immediately, making it ideal for acute clots. Warfarin is an oral tablet that takes several days to become fully effective and is used for long-term therapy.
