General Overview

Loperamide slows down the movement of the gut, which reduces the number of bowel movements and makes the stools less watery. It is not used for diarrhea with blood or high fever.

Reported Uses

Used for control and symptomatic relief of acute non-specific diarrhea and chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease.

General Characteristics

Fast acting diarrhea control, helping to reduce fluid loss and dehydration.

General Mechanism of Action

Binds to the opiate receptor in the gut wall, inhibiting acetylcholine and prostaglandin release, thereby decreasing peristalsis and increasing intestinal transit time.

Storage Guidelines

Store at room temperature below 30°C. Protect from moisture.

General Educational Notes

Rehydration with ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) is key. Loperamide only stops symptoms, it does not cure the underlying cause.
