General Overview

Spironolactone prevents the body from absorbing too much salt and keeps potassium levels from getting too low. It is widely used in heart failure management, liver cirrhosis with ascites, and resistant hypertension.

Used in NYHA Class III-IV heart failure, primary hyperaldosteronism, liver cirrhosis with ascites, and essential hypertension.

Improves survival in severe heart failure patients, reduces swelling and fluid retention in abdomen and legs.

General Mechanism of Action

Competitively inhibits aldosterone binding to receptors in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct, increasing sodium and water excretion while conserving potassium.
