Used to treat essential hypertension and to reduce cardiovascular morbidity in patients with established cardiovascular disease.
Once-daily dosing provides sustained, 24-hour blood pressure lowering. Reduces risk of heart failure and stroke.
Displaces angiotensin II with very high affinity from the AT1 receptor subtype, blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II.
Store in the original package below 30°C to protect from moisture. Do not remove tablets from blister pack until ready to use.
Telmisartan tablets readily absorb moisture from the air, so keep them sealed in the blister pack until the exact moment of administration.
In most patients, it protects kidneys. However, in patients with severe heart failure or kidney disease, it can sometimes reduce kidney function; hence regular monitoring is advised.
It is very rare for Telmisartan to cause a dry cough, unlike ACE inhibitors (like Ramipril).
